The reading Multimodal
Scaffolding in the Secondary English Classroom Curriculum focused on ways
to use multimodal presentations of information to support and scaffold concepts
that are being taught to students. Using multimodal text is an excellent way to
help students develop a deeper understanding as displayed and explained in
Bloom’s taxonomy design.
Reflecting on what
you know about multimodal text at this point in the course where do you think
you are with it on Blooms chart?
I think I am still floundering between analyzing and
evaluating… Better get prepared to create soon though!
I have been researching critical literacy for the iBook and
found this article to have a
lot of great examples of how to link multimodal learning
into critical literacy. I especially like the example of making connections
between the character they were learning about in the Life of PI to a current event in the news by using a media clip and
then using an online graphic organizer to compare and contrast the characters.
What are some
examples of ways you would use scaffolding and multimodal texts to create a
lesson for your class?

Reflecting on where I am on the Bloom’s taxonomy chart in relationship to multimodal texts is not an easy process. I feel like in some specific areas I am further up the chart toward creation. Some of the other areas within this topic, I am still in the understanding level. For example, I feel I have a firm grasp on creating instructional materials that are multimodal. I am still working on integrating this for my students to create these types of materials that correspond with their own learning.
ReplyDeleteMy topic of specialty study is multimodal text creation. Even before I knew this was my topic, I experimented by creating a teacher text explaining the writing process. I read this to the students, looked at the various features, and discussed it. Then I built on their knowledge of the app and the writing process. We proceeded to go through the writing process together using multimodal texts. We are in the process of creating that a classroom book. Eventually the students will create a multimodal text independently.
I think you lucked out by having this as your topic! You should be able to rock our final paper- maybe you'll have to teach me a thing or two on it in class on the 14th.
DeleteI think taking a moment to reflect on where we are helps us better understand the process our students will go through when they are learning to create with multimodal text.
As I reflect on what I know about multimodal texts at this point in the course I think that I am in the analyzing stage of Blooms chart where i am breaking down information into component parts. However, sometimes I feel like I may be at the Apply stage, then the evaluate stage. I have learned so many new things over the past few weeks in this class and I have also added information to my already existing schema as it pertains to certain things. I guess i'm all over the place, but I think i'm mostly at the analyzing stage, which I think is pretty good.
